Above all else, the opportunity to help individual people and families obtain a measure of justice has been the source of the greatest pride and satisfaction in my professional life. No matter how large or small the matter, once the decision is made to take the case, each client has my commitment to achieve the best possible result. My hope is that, when each case is over, all of my clients will feel they were represented by a team of professionals who cared about them as people.
Through my career-long association with the members of this firm, the guiding principles of my professional life have developed: carefully screen and investigate cases to ensure they are meritorious; conduct myself within the rules of professional ethics; be innovative and resourceful; and never be out-worked by the other side.
Following these principles, I have enjoyed consistent success in the courtroom over the years in many different kinds of cases, including automobile accidents, injuries in the work place, suits to collect on insurance policies, environmental issues, railroad crossing collisions, suits against state and local governments for dangerous conditions on streets or highways, and heavy involvement in medical malpractice and product liability, where some of my larger jury verdicts have been achieved.
Involvement in professional organizations and providing leadership to other attorneys is also part of my commitment. I have been the chairman of the Board of Editors of the Journal of the Kansas Association for Justice, and am currently the editor of the Product Liability and Consumer Law Column. As a member and chairman of the Bench and Bar Committee of the Johnson County Bar Association, I have worked to improve relations between attorneys and judges. Members of the bar have elected me since 1988 to serve on the Judicial Selection Committee for the tenth Judicial District of Kansas and, through this work, I have been involved in the selection of judges to serve the citizens of Johnson County, Kansas. I have written articles published in legal journals and regularly give lectures to other attorneys at professional seminars on subjects dealing with trial practice.
